QR vs Smart Card vs Fingerprint: Which Attendance System Suits Tuition Classes?
By NEXTGEN EDUPRO Team · · 6 min read
Ten minutes before a popular A/L class, a few hundred students reach the same gate. Whatever attendance method you choose has to survive that rush every week. Here is how the three common methods compare in a Sri Lankan tuition setting.
RFID smart cards
Students tap a card on a reader at the entrance. Taps are fast and familiar, and the card doubles as an ID. The costs are the reader hardware at every gate, card printing, and replacing lost cards. If the reader or its PC fails, the gate stops.
Fingerprint scanners
Fingerprints cannot be lent to a friend, which removes proxy attendance. In practice, enrolment takes time, dusty or sweaty fingers cause re-scans, and a single scanner becomes a queue. You are also storing biometric data about minors, which raises the bar on how carefully you protect it.
QR codes on student ID cards
Each student carries a printed ID card with a QR code. Any staff smartphone becomes a scanner, so you can open three gates on a busy day without buying anything. Scans can queue on the phone if the connection drops and sync when it returns. The weakness is that a QR card can be lent, so pair it with a photo on the scanner screen so staff can glance at the face.
Side-by-side
- Hardware cost: QR lowest (existing phones), cards medium, fingerprint highest
- Adding a gate: QR instant, cards and fingerprint need another device
- Proxy attendance: fingerprint strongest, QR with photo check is close
- Lost credential: QR reprint is free, cards cost a replacement
- Offline: depends on the vendor, so ask for a demo with Wi-Fi off
What matters more than the method
The scan itself is only half the value. The other half is what happens next: does the parent get an SMS or WhatsApp message that their child arrived, does the teacher see a live headcount, and does the system flag students who were enrolled but did not arrive? Those alerts are what parents notice and pay for.
NEXTGEN EDUPRO uses QR cards scanned from any phone, with a live attendance feed and guardian alerts. See QR door attendance or our comparison with CFMS hardware systems.
Frequently asked questions
Is QR attendance secure enough for tuition classes?
Yes for most institutes, provided the scanner shows the student photo so staff can spot a borrowed card, and each QR code is tied to one student record in the system.
